Description:
We are looking for our first Controller to own the month-end close, the balance sheet, and the accuracy of inventory and COGS across our Amazon business. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this is the senior most accounting role in the company and a critical hire. You will also own the accounting side of our migration onto Odoo. We expect this role to improve the numbers, not just report them: finding margin, recovering fees, and freeing up cash is part of the job.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the full month-end close and day to day AP and AR: journal entries, accruals, prepaids, vendor payments, receivables and every balance sheet reconciliation.
- Make where we stand financially transparent every month: P&L, balance sheet and cash flow with variance commentary, plus net margin, contribution margin and cash conversion cycle by brand across 20+ brands, reliable enough to drive investment, intervention and exit decisions.
- Own landed cost and SKU level COGS: goods, freight, duty and tariffs, broker and inbound freight, allocated across SKUs so pricing and reorder decisions are based on real cost.
- Own inventory valuation and reconcile GL inventory to units held at Amazon FBA, 3PL and warehouse. Resolve all variances, inventory, settlements, and cash, to root cause.
- Reconcile Amazon Seller Central and other marketplace settlements to the GL and to cash, including fees, reserves, chargebacks and reimbursements.
- Own partner revenue share accounting: commission calculations, partner payout reconciliation, and partner facing financial reporting.
- Come with recommendations, not just reports: recover Amazon fee errors and reimbursements, cut avoidable fees and landed cost, flag unprofitable SKUs and brands, free up cash tied in slow inventory, and surface top line opportunities the data reveal.
- Own the accounting workstream of our Odoo migration: chart of accounts, opening balances, open AP and AR, inventory valuation setup, and post cutover reconciliation.
- Ensure finance data reconciles to our BigQuery data warehouse so operating dashboards and the financials tell the same story, and automate the ERP and reporting stack so manual work shrinks as we scale.
- Write the accounting policies, SOPs and internal controls that a future team can run.
What Success Looks Like
- Month-end closed within 5 business days, with 100% of balance sheet accounts reconciled and supported.
- Amazon settlement to GL variance under 0.5% of monthly marketplace revenue.
- GL inventory agrees to physical and system units within 2% by value at each month-end.
- Odoo goes live on schedule, with zero unreconciled opening balances at cutover.
- Brand level P&L published monthly for every brand, tying to the consolidated P&L with no unallocated cost buckets.
- Cash conversion cycle measured reliably for the first time, then driven down toward 10 days.
- Net margin improved by 50% year over year through the insights and recommendations you surface.
- Measurable bottom line contribution: recovered reimbursements, fee reductions and margin fixes that more than cover the cost of the role.
Requirements
Essential:
- 5+ years in accounting, including at least 2 years at senior or controller level owning a close end to end.
- E-commerce accounting experience: you have closed the books for an online seller, not only for a general commercial business.
- Hands-on Amazon Seller Central experience, including settlement reports, fees, reserves and reimbursements.
- ERP experience, and you have lived through an implementation or migration.
- Inventory and landed cost accounting, multi-currency purchasing, and imported goods.
- Advanced Excel and Google Sheets, comfortable reconciling files of 50,000+ rows.
- Working SQL and comfort in a data warehouse environment such as BigQuery, with an automation mindset: you would rather build the pipeline than repeat the manual work.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal English, with the ability to explain results to non-finance stakeholders.
- Able to work U.S. business hours, EST or CST, from wherever you are based, with a reliable home office and internet connection.
