Database Support Analyst

Description:

Monitor DB instance health (availability, storage, replication status, job outcomes) and address alerts.

Validate backup success across all engines; perform periodic restore tests and document DR evidence.

Execute routine maintenance tasks such as index rebuild/reorganize, statistics updates, vacuuming (Postgres), engine-specific health tasks.

Apply minor version patches, driver updates, and configuration changes under change control.

Troubleshoot connectivity, authentication, and TLS/driver issues.

Assist with basic performance triage using wait stats, query insights, execution plans, and baseline metrics.

Maintain accurate inventory data (ownership, instance metadata, CMDB attributes).

Enforce security controls (least privilege, TLS enforcement, audit settings) and document exceptions.

Ensure correct monitoring templates, thresholds, and alert routing for each DB engine.

Support migration and consolidation projects; validate pre/post migration health.

Coordinate with storage/backup teams to optimize throughput and restore SLAs.

Prepare capacity/utilisation reports (DB growth, log file growth, IO saturation).

Maintain operational KB articles and SOPs for frequent tasks and known issues.

Participate in DR testing (log shipping, replication failover) and document results.

Escalate complex engine‑specific tuning, query optimization, or schema issues to L3 DB SMEs.

Skills Required:

Operational knowledge of MS SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.

Ability to perform and validate backups using native tools (msdb jobs, mysqldump, pg_dump, MongoDB snapshots).

Familiarity with execution plans, indexing basics, query analysis, slow query diagnosis.

Understanding of replication fundamentals (MS SQL AO groups basics, MySQL replication, Postgres streaming replication, MongoDB replica sets).

Knowledge of TLS/certificate usage on DB endpoints and basic driver configuration.

Monitoring skills: tuning thresholds, interpreting alerts, understanding engine-specific metrics.

Good ITSM, documentation, and CMDB hygiene.

Basic scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python) is an advantage.
